Know anything about Chamonix and/or Beaune?
My boyfriend and I are going to the French Alps in March by way of Paris (we will also see Paris, so it isn’t as crazy as it sounds). We are renting a car and driving. I know a little about Beaune and Chamonix from Rick Steves videos. Anything that we shouldn’t miss? Any other places in Burgundy country we should stop?

We don’t speak French – I’m from Texas, so the no-brainier foreign language to take in school was Spanish – but I’ve been to France before in areas that don’t speak English at all, so I’m not afraid to go somewhere that tends not get English-speaking visitors.

Brenda’s got a son

So after her death, her baby bounced around
from family to orphanage, overseeing the burial mound
her son grew up too fast, and lived in the same neighborhood
living with a family, only a few blocks from where he should
he grew up a street thug, just like his role models around him
without love at home, only money and drugs surround him
the family he was with, didnt care about him much
lonely was his heart, for he never felt the touch
of a warm hug, left to die in a trash bin

Runaway Train (1985)

Any Aquarians willing to help – not knowing how to cope with this guy?
I’m a Libra – if this happens to matter.

I met this Aquarian guy 2 years ago. We were doing a school function or whatnot and got along fabulously. Some people tell me that he liked me at the time – looking back, I’m pretty sure he did but then I had eyes for someone else so I never noticed or cared really. I loved him as a friend.

After the function, we drifted apart some – then one day we started talking again – I randomly drifted his way and we had a great conversation. he texted me all day and all evening after that. And the next day too. Suddenly all contact on his end stopped. He gave stupid excuses like having run out of battery/credit etc. I was confused and hurt.

I found out he had a girlfriend. He’d been flirting with me pretty heavily so I felt horrible – I stopped talking to him (stupid, I know) and avoiding him alot. He noticed and that made him mad so he started purposely coming my way and giving me the cold shoulder in effort to ‘force’ me to talk to him. Things got very cold – we’d brush each other off on purpose, he’d get pissed at his friends who talked to me, etc.

Okay, very very VERY long story short – somewhere along the lines I started talking to him again with help from his best friend who kind of pushed things along indirectly – we never once openly acknowledged the problem or referred to it. Everything was fine again. By this time I had pretty much fallen for him until – out of the blue, he asked out his ex once again.

I was completely disillusioned and just stayed away from him for fear of hurting her feelings (she’s a friend of mine. not close at all but I know her, sweet girl.) and fucking up my own. He didn’t bother contacting me again.

Once – maybe just once he tried to speak to me but I answered with sarcasm. I feel harsh now but at the time all I wanted was to distance myself of fear of hurting more. Things were pretty cold then.

Some months later he was about to leave go abroad and the day before he left we talked online – and this was completely unexpected – he told me he was completely in love with her (his ex/current gf) and feared she’d leave him while he was gone, bla bla bla. I couldnt believe he was telling ME of all people about it but I tried to support him because – well I care. I just do. And I did my best to make him feel better.

Then out of nowhere he told me – its the guy who should chase the girl. Not the other way round. I know he was referring to my repeated attempts of contacting him some time prior. I just do. But he never seemed to mind, ever. In fact. he always went along with it.

He then told me to listen to Runaway train by Soul Asylum. I still dont fully understand the words.

And we wished each other well and he left.

Now some months later, he’s still with her (long distance) and coming back to visit. I feel like there’s still this unfinished rift between us and its killing me that we’ve never once acknowledged it openly. It makes me wonder if Im imagining it or going insane – what if I’m one sided on this? I still have feelings for him but I don’t want to ruin everything more than I have.

I’ve seen him online a few times but none of us spoke. Maybe he doesn’t want to speak with me any more.

He was once a friend and I just want him back – somehow. I was thinking of sending him the song White Flag by Dido because it says everything I want to – but I’m terrified of freaking him out. What if he thinks I’m crazy?

Please help me if you’ve any experience with Aquarians or are one. I just want things to be okay again – maybe as far as he’s concerned, they are and he’s happy with her. But I still feel the pain.

Who is the real "enemy"?
In the years since September 11, 2001, America has re-paid/retaliated, for the loss of 3,000 Americqan lives, by invading atleast two, foreign nations. I just wonder how many tens, or hundreds, of thousands, of Iraqi, and Afghan, civilians have perished, as America seeks to avenge the loss of our 3,000.

In the days since 9/11/01, Americans have been lectured with "The enemy is everywhere". The question is, how bad has this rhetoric become when children are banned from planes, under the suspicion of being "potential bombers"? How bad has we become if all religious symbols are suspected of being possible explosives?

How different are we, than our "enemy", when we say that torture, and interrogation, of "foreign nationales", is "necessary", yet we condemn other nations, for torture, and interrogation, of Americans, such as the recent, on-line story of the first female ex-pow?

Have we regressed so far, as to return to the days of McCarthyism,"Better dead than red", and so on? Over these past tears, Americans have been taught to question anything which is "different", and to having neighbors suspecting neighbors, for "suspicious changes in behavior".

I just wonder if America’s mational sjogan: "We will never forget" should be replaced with "We have met the enemy, and they are US"? HAve we become our own worst ebeny, when every necklace, toy, handbag, ipod, and so on, is suspect as a potential bomb? How similar is the phrase "The terrorists are everywhere. If we dont destroy them, they will destroy us" than its counterpart "The only thing to fear is fear, itself".

Has American paranoia lead us to the point where everyone is suspect, and anyone, even infants, are to be suspected, as possible "enemy agents"? When we begin to suspect one another "just because" then haven’t we become our own worst enemy?

How can America be a mighty nation, bringing peace, and "democracy", to the eorld, when our own ppeople no longer trust one another? If we continue to live under the dark cloud, of suspicion, and paranoia, then haven’t we, in fact, become a much worse enemy, than the "underwear bomber"?

Have we forgotten that America was founded not by American’s, but by refugee’s, from England, Russia, Germany, and so on.

How long will we remain our own worst enemy?

Every couple of decades we NEED a new enemy.

We either create these enemies (the CIA calls it BLOWBACK), or we simply imagine them (have you noticed that, according to media hype, the terrorists are fcuking EVERYWHERE?).

One good way to create enemies is outlined in the John Perkins book "Confessions of an Economic Hit Man".

When America interferes, intervenes, meddles, and pushes her way into foreign countries, some of the citizens of these countries get agitated.

Now, don’t get mad at me. I know that Americans would welcome, with open arms, ANY foreign country meddling in our internal affairs. We would LOVE to have Chinese or Russian troops stationed in our larger cities. As a matter of fact, answering a Russian soldier’s probing questions, at a security check point just outside of Baltimore or Los Angeles, would be quite an honor, don’t you think?

However, the SAVAGES in these ridiculous Third World nations don’t think like Americans do. They don’t like foreign troops on their soil. Crazy, aren’t they?

When should I tell my employer I'm pregnant?
I’m 8 weeks pregnant and have been in my job over two years and I was wondering when I have to tell my employer I’m pregnant. I work for a magazine so there is no heavy lifting involved just a lot of sitting, writing and meeting people really. I know where I work they encourage you to take a full year out to bond but I really couldn’t take a year out of work as much as I hate to say it I currently love my job more than my child – though I am sure this will change over time.

Also in your opinion which is the best way to give birth with an epidural, natural, water, c-section, etc. I was thinking of having a natural birth but people keep saying it’s gonna hurt and I’ll regret it but to me it seems really my only option as I am scared of needles, the water birth bothers me slightly as does the C-section. To me there is something unnatural about giving birth in water or having a C-section but that’s my option.

Also what are the pros and cons cloth versus disposable nappies/diapers?

5 yr. old doesn't listen, advice?
My 5 year old is way too active. He does not stop. It is becoming a problem in school. He doesn’t pay attention, disrupts the other children, gets to the point where he doesn’t even know what assignment they are doing. He’s gone to the principals office twice because the teacher can not get him to stop. I get daily complaints and at one point I thought the teacher was just picking on him.

Yesterday he had his t-ball practice and that’s when I saw exactly how i imagine he behaves in school. It is out of control. He has never been a mean or disrespectful boy in any way. He just flat out doesn’t listen. I don’t know if he has a hard time processing it or if he just doesn’t care. He doesn’t follow directions, can’t sit still in line to wait his turn, he kept picking up and swinging his bat after being told the rules, etc. As soon as we tell him to stop doing something he will turn right around and do it again. Like if he was never told or just blocks it out. We’ve grounded him, taken toys and privileges away, and we’ve spanked as a very last resort. We’ve tried to avoid spanking as much as we could, but i’m starting to think we’re going to have to do it more often. None of this fazes him, he’ll be sad about his punishment, but as soon as it’s over he’s right back at it. I have asked him why he acts this way or if something is bothering him or if he’s getting bullied at school and his response is " I try to stop but my brain doesn’t let me." My first thought ADHD, but I didn’t want to jump the gun either. Could this be a medical problem or he just doesn’t have self control?

Any advice on how to help him control his behaviour?

There’s got to be something out there besides medication for him, maybe try yoga every morning, sound SO SILLY I’m sure, but you never know? I would also try and cut out sugar from his diet. I cut down my sons sugar intake and, oh my god, the difference it made in his attitude was HUGE.
Ask a pediatrician if anything suggested here would work, just because, you know, I’m not a medical professional.

This way you will rule out any neurological disorder or like you mentioned a behavioural problem like ADHD.

If all medical disorders are ruled out you might consider seeking the advice of a child/educational psychologist to help you with his behaviour.

Have you approached the school? if his behaviour is so disruptive at school has nothing been said to you? Or any suggestions from the school as a way to improve the situation? If they have not approached you I suggest you go straight away to speak to the principal and explain your worries and how he behaves at home. In my opinion you should be speaking to everyone who has dealings with your son, eg school principal, class teacher, GP, t-ball coach. You should all be approaching his behaviour from the same stance.

And in the meantime don?t resort to smacking, however disruptive his behaviour becomes and however mad you become. I don?t believe it helps with any child, but especially one with possible behavioural issues.
